First four models eligible for Electric Car Grant annouced

Transport secretary Heidi Alexander has confirmed buyers can enjoy £1,500 discounts off four models of Citroën cars: ë-C3, ë-C4, ë-C5, and the ë-Berlingo, starting from today. The discount will be automatically applied when purchasing so customers don’t need to do any paperwork.

These four models are the first to be eligible for the government’s new £650 million Electric Car Grant (ECG) scheme, which will offer discounts on new electric cars of up to £3,750. More models that will be eligible for the discount will be announced over the next few days and weeks.

The government has announced changes to the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate, which it says will make it easier for industry to meet the transition targets.

Part of this includes a confirmation that the 2030 phase-out date for new petrol and diesel car sales will be reinstated, but with hybrid cars allowed to be sold until 2035.

The government says the changes announced will strengthen its commitment to switch to electric vehicles while also introducing practical reforms to support the industry meet this target.

A government consultation is seeking views on delivering the commitment to end the sale of new cars powered exclusively by internal combustion engines by 2030, as in line with the UK’s transition to zero emissions vehicles. It is accepting responses until the 18th February 2025.

This morning (29th November 2024), the government announced the resignation of secretary of state for transport the Rt Hon Louise Haigh MP by releasing her letter to the prime minister, dated the day prior.

In her letter she details the reasons for her resignation. After being mugged in 2013, she incorrectly reported her work phone as stolen, later finding it at her house. She writes: “I should have immediately informed my employer and not doing so straight away was a mistake.”
