GKN Automotive has created a ‘real-time’ test rig for electric vehicles which accommodates the differing demands and load dynamics of EVs on driveline components

According to GKN, the rig, installed at its facility in Offenbach, Germany, can handle the extreme dynamics and higher torque of electrified powertrains which make conventional load test rigs unsuitable for driveline parts of the latest generation, such as side shafts.

Data by Jato Dynamics has shown that demand for electrified vehicles was up by 31% in March in Europe - mostly driven by German, Norwegian, Spanish and Dutch registrations. Electric and plug-in hybrids counted for almost half of that total, but the real driver of growth was the BEV, whose registrations increased by 85%.

It was the first time that registrations of electrified cars (BEV, PHEV, HEV) exceeded the 100,000 units mark, with a total of 125,400.

Hyundai Motor Group has created a smartphone app which allows users to customise the performance of their electric vehicle to their own liking.

Drivers can use this technology to adjust seven performance features including the maximum torque output of the motor, ignition, acceleration and deceleration abilities, regenerative braking capacity, maximum speed limit, responsiveness, and energy use on climate control.

Battery technology company Moixa has been given government funding to create a virtual power plant (VPP) linking solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles in hundreds of homes, schools and council buildings.

The project aims to demonstrate how smart technology which could cut energy costs by 10 per cent and save the UK £32 billion if rolled out nationally.

The company is part of a consortium of UK technology leaders that has secured £13 million from the government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.
