A new white paper from Alphabet, a leasing and fleet management company, has found that a large number of businesses in the UK are not able to calculate, capture and report their fleet emissions.

Compliance with the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) legislation means that all UK publicly quoted companies must now report their global energy use, as well as their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in their annual report.

New research has found that two-thirds of fleet managers aren’t tracking harmful emissions caused by their vehicles. This study was carried out by Microlise, the global technology solutions provider.

This presents a significant opportunity to save some of the 43,000 lives lost per year linked to air pollution, while also making the environment and air much cleaner.

The government has set an economy-wide target of an 81 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), which are harming the air, the environment, and peoples’ health.

Westminster City Council is introducing emissions-based charging for residents and visitors who drive into the city.

The new schemes will be introduced for residents with parking permits and people who pay-to-park in Westminster.

The new emissions-based charging schemes will see vehicles being charged based on their levels of CO2 emissions. Vehicles that produce lower levels of CO2 will be charged less in comparison to those which produce more.

The changes are designed to help Westminster reach its goal of a Net Zero City by 2040 and tackle poor air quality.

Clean transport campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E) has warned that plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) pollute significantly more than claimed on city and commuter routes.

Two years ago, Transport & Environment (T&E) found the technology, which contains an electric battery and a combustion engine, polluted significantly more than advertised on longer routes. It says its new tests confirm beyond doubt that these vehicles should be taxed based on their actual pollution and stop subsidising their sale.
