November sees the UK host the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, to accelerate action towards climate change goals.

The UK is committed to working with all countries and joining forces with civil society, companies and people on the frontline of climate change to inspire climate action ahead of COP26, where the decarbonisation of transport will be high on the agenda.

Nissan begins production of new LEAF in Sunderland

Nissan has begun production of the next generation LEAF in Sunderland - making it the first new high volume electric car to be produced in the UK since 2020.

Nissan has invested more than £450 million into manufacturing the new LEAF at their Wearside plant - including over £300 million directly into the firm’s UK operations.

Industry Minister Chris McDonald will attend the launch in Sunderland on 16 December.

The new XPENG G6 is the latest model to launch in the UK market, following the brand's launch in February 2025.

Tanya Sinclair, the Chief Executive of Electric Vehicles UK (EVUK) has told MPs that “inconsistent government policy and confused communication are undermining the UK’s shift to electric vehicles,” and are now posing a real risk to meeting the Seventh Carbon Budget.

Sinclair appeared before the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) on 3 December, giving oral evidence as part of the committee’s inquiry into the UK’s next statutory carbon target for 2038–2042.

Arnold Clark, one of the largest car dealers in the UK, has found that 17% of its EV customers last year were managers or directors of a company.

Teachers were second on the list, making up 5% of drivers buying electric cars from Arnold Clark in 2024.

Nurses, police officers and engineers were all tied at around 3%.

The data also found that a quarter of Arnold Clark’s EV sales in 2024 were to customers in the south of England.

A new UK-Germany electric vehicle technology project led by Mercedes will create new jobs across Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire.

It comes as the German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier begins his three-day State Visit to the UK today, to bolster the UK’s economic ties with Germany.

The project led by Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains – renowned for the power units used in Formula 1 cars – will create over 150 new, high valued jobs whilst securing another 34 existing roles. It will also strengthen the UK’s EV supply chain.

£1.3 billion more funding to extend electric car grant

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced a £1.3 billion additional funding for the electric car grant - extending it to 2030.

Announced in the 2025 Budget, this takes the total funding for the grant to £2 billion.

The electric car grant was announced in July and gives discounts of up to £3,750 at the point of sale for new eligible electric cars priced at or under £37,000.

The grant level is £1,500 or £3,750 depending on the vehicle's environmental score.

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers will be subject to a new “mileage-based charge” from April 2028, confirmed in the Chancellor's 2025 Budget.

This is to help offset any declines in fuel duty as electrification continues.

The eVED charge will apply to both battery electric cars and plug-in hybrids, marking a significant shift in how zero-emission motoring is taxed in the UK.

Battery electric vehicles will incur a charge of 3p per mile in addition to existing road taxes, while plug-in hybrids will be charged 1.5p per mile during the 2028–29 financial year.

The call to protect momentum around the UK’s EV targets comes amidst pre-Budget lobbying for it to be weakened for the second time in 2025. Other potential Budget policy measures also risk undermining business certainty and economic opportunity, despite growing evidence of rising demand for BEVs.

Octopus EV secures more funds to grow EV fleet

Octopus Electric Vehicles (Octopus EV) has extended its funding line from global banks to get more electric vehicles on roads, bringing its total EV funding to £2 billion.

The deal, announced at COP30 in Brazil, allows Octopus to grow its EV fleet, pushing it from 40,000 cars currently to more than 75,000 once all funds are deployed.

This builds on a major funding line agreed with Lloyds in 2023, now joined by international banks Morgan Stanley and Crédit Agricole CIB.
