Researchers at Birmingham City University (BCU) have received almost £50,000 to develop AI- powered strategies to make transport in the UK more greener and resilient to the impacts of climate change.

27 per cent of the UK's total greenhouse gas emissions are produced by transport, with road transport alone accounting for 90 per cent of that figure.

The project will examine key transport corridors across the UK, using real-time data, international best practices, and AI tools to produce decision-making support systems and practical policy guidance.

In the Spending Review 2025, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced a commitment to spend £2.6bn on decarbonising transport, £1.4bn of which is to support the continued uptake of electric cars, vans and trucks.

It also includes £400 million for the further rollout of charging infrastructure.

The Spending Review also commits to extending the Advanced Fuels Fund to 2029-30 to support the production of sustainable aviation fuel, as well as £616 million to build and maintain walking and cycling infrastructure.

More than 2,000 zero emission buses in London

There are now more than 2,000 zero-emission buses on the capital’s streets, with TfL reporting that it is the largest zero emission bus fleet in Western Europe.

Zero emission buses make up more than 20 per cent of the entire bus fleet, increasing from 30 in 2016.

The new Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has set out five key priorities to deliver the biggest overhaul to transport in a generation.

The Secretary of State Louise Haigh convened officials to begin work across the department on rail reform, further devolution of bus powers, ensuring infrastructure works for the whole country, and supporting local authorities to fix roads for the long term.

In her first address to Department for Transport (DfT) staff, Haigh set out her strategic priorities, putting transport at the heart of mission-driven government.

The Department for Transport has launched a £2 million Transport Decarbonisation Demonstrators programme to encourage businesses and local authorities to work together to develop and trial transport schemes that cut emissions in the long term.

Any UK business can apply for up to £500,000 to run innovative trials that tackle local transport challenges on the ground. Half of this £2 million fund will be reserved for rural areas.

The Department for Transport is to trial new innovative noise cameras, and a search has begun for Britain’s noisiest streets across England and Wales as trial locations.

The technology, backed by £300,000, can automatically detect when vehicles are breaking legal noise requirements, helping provide police and local authorities with the tools and evidence to take action against drivers who flout noise laws. Police have existing powers, including the ability to issue fines, but currently have trouble gathering evidence.

Urban-Air Port has opened Air-One, a hub for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles – such as air taxis – and autonomous cargo drones.

Urban-Air Port – backed by the UK Government and supported by Supernal – will operate Air-One in the heart of Coventry for at least one month. Air-One will provide a blueprint for more than 200 vertiports planned worldwide by Urban-Air Port over the next five years to meet growing demand.

The Department for Transport has set out a new group of aviation experts across industry and government who will work together to make zero emission flight a reality.

The new Zero Emission Flight (ZEF) Delivery Group will help position the UK at the forefront of the global shift to green aviation by supporting the development of zero emission aircraft and airport infrastructure. It will also look at how the law needs to adapt so that sustainable flying can truly become a reality.
