Association of Fleet Professionals' tax manifesto launched

The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) has launched its 'tax manifesto' designed to form the basis of future campaigning on taxation.

The AFP Tax Manifesto 2021 consists of 13 points the organisation believes needs changing or defining to enable businesses move forward with their fleet and mobility plans.

It is being unveiled as part of the industry body’s “Tax and the Company Car” webinar, which provides general advice on year-end taxation and company cars, as well as examining the possibilities of the new 130% superdeduction.

New company car benefit-in-kind tax tables should be provided up to 2030 if the government adopts this date as its new electrification target, says the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP).

Paul Hollick, AFP chair, explained: “At the AFP, our opinion is that the proposed 2030 electrification target is achievable from a fleet point of view but that we would need a high level of co-operation from the Government to get there.

New company car tax rates on zero-emission vehicles, effective from April 2020, are expected to offer savings in the region of 95% for employees, according to new analysis from Deloitte.

This is because of the significant tax incentive of the incoming 0% company car tax rate on zero emission vehicles; down from 16% currently.

Transport Committee kickstarts conversation on national road pricing

The Transport Committee wants to start a discussion on road pricing, ahead of an inquiry to be formally announced in early 2020, when views will be sought from drivers and non-drivers alike about the future of road-based transport.

The £40 billion annual income from Fuel Duty and Vehicle Excise Duty is likely to decline sharply in future, and may end entirely if road transport is electrified within two decades. This income will need to be replaced if the Government is to continue to invest in transport infrastructure and prepare the transport network for a new greener future.

Company car drivers choosing a fully electric vehicle will pay no benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax in 2020/21, the government has said in its response to its review of WLTP and vehicle taxes.

All zero emission models will pay no company car tax in 2020-21, one per cent in 2021-22, and then returning to the planned two per cent rate in 2022-23.

For cars first registered from 6 April 2020, most company car tax rates will be reduced by 2ppt in 2020-21 before returning to planned rates over the following two years – increasing by 1ppt in 2021-22 and 1ppt in 2022-23.
