The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) is raising the importance of fleets responding to the new government consultation on Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) to highlight potential problems.

Paul Hollick, chair, said that the industry body’s members broadly accepted the need for the government to recover revenue lost from petrol and diesel fuel duty but there were major concerns about the system being proposed.

The Renewable Energy Association (REA) has responded to the government's consultation on the UK's transition to zero-emission vehicles, saying that it strongly opposes the inclusion of full hybrid vehicles.

The association says that hybrids have a significantly higher CO2 emissions range and ultimately their electric batteries are powered by petrol and diesel.

The trade association is also opposed to the increasing of flexibilities around the annual targets beyond 2026, which currently include carbon trading and ‘borrowing’ credits from future years.

The Transport Secretary and Business Secretary have met with the automotive industry on the phasing out of new petrol and diesel vehicles and the ZEV Mandate.

The REA has outlined what it believes are the key priorities and policy steps the new Government must take in its first 100 days in office

Regarding transport, the REA says that 50 per cent of UK transport energy demand must be decarbonised by 2035.

To achieve this, the REA believes that the next government should immediately reinstate the initial 2030 phase-out date for sales of new petrol and diesel cars.
