Four in five (81.2%) automotive aftermarket workshops have invested in training, talent and tooling to carry out servicing and maintenance of the latest powertrain technology and vehicle safety features, according to a new survey by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The findings come as the SMMT publishes its latest Aftermarket Report which explores the sector’s readiness to support increasingly sophisticated and electrified vehicles.

The latest EV TechSafe data from the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has revealed a shift in the point when the number of technicians qualified to work on Electric Vehicles (EVs) falls below the minimum number required.

Previous projections suggested a shortfall would appear in 2029 and reach 13,000 by 2032. The latest analysis predicts the skills gap will only materialise in 2032 with a gap of 5,670.

A new project from the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) is aiming to create the a clear picture when comparing electric vehicle (EV) service, maintenance and repair (SMR) costs to their internal combustion engine (ICE) equivalents.

Paul Hollick chair at the AFP, said that much of the current data and information surrounding the subject was incomplete, inconsistent or contradictory – and that the objective was to provide something as close as possible to a conclusive guide.

The cover is designed to give buyers of electric vehicles peace of mind when making the switch.

The offer is available on Groupe PSA's plug-in hybrid and full electric including the new Peugeot e-208 and 3008 SUV Hybrid, new Vauxhall Corsa-e, Grandland X Hybrid and Hybrid4, new DS 3 Crossback E-Tense and DS 7 Crossback E-Tense 4x4 and the new Citroën C5 Aircross Hybrid.

Northgate launches new app for insight into vehicle checks

Van rental company Northgate has announced the launch of a new Vehicle Inspection App to facilitate and streamline the end to end management of fleet vehicles.

The App allows Northgate customers to monitor all daily vehicle checks, providing added insights into where the checks were carried out, how long they took, and what, if any, defects were identified. The system Powered by CheckedSafe uses existing kit, namely smartphones or tablets, and requires no additional capital investment.
