Research from What Car? has found that electric vehicles (EVs) breakdown more frequently than petrol, diesel, or hybrid models, and they are also the least likely to be repaired at the roadside.

The findings were taken from What Car?'s 2024 Reliability Survey, which was conducted with MotorEasy and asked 29,967 motorists to list Britain's most and least reliable cars.

EV charging company Mer is supporting the AA electric breakdown vehicles, by installing chargers at the drivers' homes, where the vans are parked over night.

The AA also required EV chargers that were compatible with Mina Homecharge. This is a software platform which ensures that employees don’t pay for charging work vehicles at home, as the employer is billed directly.

The AA has added a dozen battery electric vehicles into its operational roadside service fleet, including three capable of EV to EV mobile charging.

One of the AA’s EV vehicles will be providing support for participants at the 2023 EV Rally, which set off from Cardiff this morning. The five day event, sponsored by Lex Autolease, looks to showcase charging infrastructure and the capabilities of both electric cars and vans across Great Britain and the whole of Ireland.

Fifty-two per cent of drivers in an AA poll say they consider the safe repair and any potential replacement of the main driving battery to be an area of concern should an electric car be involved in a collision.

The survey of more than 13,500 drivers by AA Accident Assist, found that three fifths (62%) of drivers are most concerned with the cost of EV repairs.

The RAC has announced it will be piloting a zero-emission Renault Zoe Van E-Tech to attend breakdowns.

The RAC deals with around 7,000 random events every day meaning a 200-plus mile range was a critical requirement. The Renault Zoe patrol van will principally be used to attend the RAC’s two most common breakdowns – batteries and tyres – which together account for nearly half of all call-outs. As such the van carries up to six replacement 12v car batteries, two tyres, a trolley jack, a battery tester, the RACScan diagnostic tool and a host of standard patrol tools.

Groupe PSA has announced that its Roadside Assistance programme has been extended for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic to all NHS workers who currently drive a Peugeot, Citroën, DS Automobiles or Vauxhall vehicle and do not already have any mechanical breakdown cover.

The AA has received five per cent fewer call-outs related to AdBlue in the first half of 2019, compared with the same period the previous year, showing that the AdBlue message is getting through to drivers.
