London Fire Brigade gains funding to support electric fleet plans

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has delivered a £47 million boost to London’s net-zero goals as he announces the three new beneficiaries of his Green Finance Fund (GFF).

One of the beneficiaries is the London Fire Brigade, which will receive a £22.4 million financing facility from the Green Finance Fund.

The funding will be used to upgrade the electrical infrastructure of over 50 London fire stations in order to support the transition to an electric vehicle fleet.

GreenFleet Award winner London Ambulance Service put its first electric ambulance into service responding to emergencies on New Year's Eve for the first time.

The new bespoke ambulances are part of London Ambulance Service’s ambition to drive towards a net zero fleet, reducing operational costs incurred from fuel and maintenance, as well as improving air quality for Londoners to help reduce the prevalence of major diseases in the capital.

Peel Ports, the second largest port group in the UK, has taken delivery of four electric pickup trucks to be used in its police fleet.

The four Maxus T90s, supplied by supplied through Activa, are an addition to the port’s security in conjunction with the police and represent a pivotal shift in Peel Ports's vehicle fleet strategy. These eco-friendly Police vehicles offer numerous advantages, including reduced emissions and lower operating costs.

Ambulance Service begins to electrify rapid response fleet

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) has added two electric Škoda Enyaqs to its rapid response fleet, as it looks to electrify its fleet and work towards net zero.

The vehicles were introduced following a successful trial period to evaluate the car’s suitability for blue-light duty. The fully electric SUVs join the current fleet, which is comprised of Škoda Octavia Scout models. The rapid response fleet is in high demand with the Trust on average receving a 999 call every 25 seconds.

London Ambulance Service has taken on a fleet of electric Mustang Mach-E cars for its Fast Response Unit.

Seven of the cars are already in use with a further 35 being delivered over the next few weeks, making this the biggest fully electric fleet of Fast Response Units (FRUs) in the UK.

Daniel Elkeles, Chief Executive of London Ambulance Service (LAS), said: “I’m very proud we have the biggest electric fleet of fast response cars in the country and can contribute to reaching net zero.

The British Army will be testing electric vehicles in a series of experimental battlefield/military scenarios, which will assess performance over steep terrain, wading and towing, and different climate-related conditions.

Partnering with electric vehicle (EV) experts, Electrogenic, Babcock will convert four in-service military Land Rovers, two protected vehicles and two general service, from diesel fueled to EV using a drop-in kit and modified battery system. The vehicles will then be put to the test by the Armoured Trials and Development Unit (ATDU).

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) is trialling five Kia Sportage plug-in hybrid vehicles PHEVs.

Four of the five new ULEVs have been incorporated into the Service’s training fleet, which will assist with ongoing emergency response driver training. The remaining car will soon be introduced to the fleet of emergency response vehicles and will be used to attend some of the varied incidents the Service is called to.

MAHLE Powertrain is working with White Motorcycle Concepts (WMC) to develop a fully electric three-wheeled motorcycle perfectly suited to the requirements of police, emergency first responders and last-mile delivery fleets.

The project will adapt the design of the Yamaha Tricity 300 to replace its combustion engine with an electric powertrain with fast-charging capability and a targeted 100 mile operating range.
