Electric scooter hire schemes to be rolled out in London

A new electric scooter rental scheme will launch in London next month, where Londoners will be legally able to use e-scooters on public roads.

The schemes will only operate in a few parts of central, south and west London as the capital prioritises safety. Three operators – Tier, Lime and Dott – have been chosen by TfL to run the service.

Spin, the micromobility unit of Ford Motor Company, has announced that its e-scooter trial has seen more than 100,000 rides since launch.

This milestone has been achieved in just five months across the six service areas in Essex, partly driven by a growing need for a socially-distanced means of transport as people slowly return to being out and about, including commuting to work and running errands.

The Welsh Government will fund pilot schemes to accelerate the uptake of electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric cargo bikes (e-cargo bikes) in Wales.

The move is part of efforts to deliver a culture change in how people get around in Wales and adds to a range of Welsh Government policies that look to tackle congestion and get people more active.

The pilots will see four e-bike ‘hubs’ established in Rhyl, Swansea, Aberystwyth (with links to Newtown) and Barry. They will offer low cost hire and long-term loan of e-bikes for local residents.

£30m for 'centres of excellence' to electrify transport

The government has announced a £36.7 million investment to design, test and manufacture electric transport including cars, ships and planes.

£30 million will be used to create four 4 new centres of excellence - based in Newport, Nottingham, Strathclyde and Sunderland – which will bring together climate change pioneers to research and develop technologies to electrify transport.

The first all-electric passenger boat powered by ‘second life’ batteries has been developed. Called Black Swan, the new craft was developed through a partnership with Renault, French specialist maritime company Seine Alliance, and electric propulsion experts Green-Vision.
