GREENFLEET 162

In just four years, the UK will stop selling new petrol and diesel cars, with vans and hybrid cars following in 2035. The latest issue of GREENFLEET focuses on how fleet operators can prepare with confidence for this major shift.

The issue includes expert advice on government EV grants, telematics, energy management and charging infrastructure, alongside analysis of the latest Budget measures and what they mean for electric vehicle drivers. There’s also an interview with Simon Kidsley at Keolis Amey Docklands, who explains how the organisation has successfully moved away from diesel to operate a fully electric fleet.

Hydrogen is also under the spotlight. For vehicles requiring long range, minimal downtime and fast refuelling, it can be a compelling zero-emission option. Amanda Lyne, Chair of the Hydrogen Energy Association, examines the current state of hydrogen in road transport and outlines what needs to change for it to scale.

Finally, we take an in-depth look at the winners of the 2025 GREENFLEET Awards, held in December, celebrating the organisations leading the way in sustainable fleet and transport management.

I hope you enjoy the issue.

Inside this issue, we explore how telematics is enabling more informed and data-led decisions when it comes to making the switch, and we also delve into the government’s Depot Charging Scheme, which offers fleet operators grants for installing depot-based EV charging infrastructure. With applications closing in November, fleets are being urged to act now.

Elsewhere, we unpack the essentials that every driver needs to know when they get behind the wheel of an electric vehicle, and we examine the unique challenges around electrifying vans.

Finally, we bring you highlights from the Explorer EV Rally, which took place in September. The event saw a diverse range of electric vehicles cover more than 1,000 miles across five days, putting the UK's public charging infrastructure to the test.

GREENFLEET 160

With electrification still some way off from being viable for HGV operators, we explore the options of using sustainable drop-in fuels like HVO and biomethane that offer an immediate route to reduced emissions.

On the battery-electric front, the government's extension of the Plug-in Van and Truck Grant to at least 2027, alongside new support for depot charging, gives operators more confidence to invest. We unpack how fleets can tap into these schemes.

And finally, we take a deep dive into the projects that are putting zero-emission HGVs on the roads with real fleets, along with the charging infrastructure to make them viable at scale.

Van Electrification Whitepaper: Understanding Barriers, Identifying Solutions

This new whitepaper by GREENFLEET, in partnership with Europcar, highlights the pressing challenges slowing the electrification of the UK’s van sector, despite government zero-emission vehicle targets.

Drawing on survey data from GREENFLEET's readership of fleet operators, the whitepaper investigates the operational, and regulatory issues preventing fleets from adopting zero-emission vans at scale and presents a compelling call for more targeted government support, charging infrastructure reform, and industry collaboration.

One of the biggest takeaways from the whitepaper is that range anxiety, high upfront costs, and a lack of van-suitable public charging infrastructure remain the dominant barriers. Forty-five percent of fleet operators using electric vans reported that the ‘real-world range’ fell short of expectations once vehicles were fully loaded and in day-to-day operation.

The white paper concludes with a series of policy and market recommendations to overcome the challenges to van electrification faced by fleet operators.
